I am very sad to hear of the projected development. We have been coming to Maui for 5 years and always head to Makena first. This is without a doubt my favorite spot on the island and I have enjoyed reading about and experiencing the rich history of the area. As a mainlander, I know that we come to Maui for the wide open spaces and natural beauty – development in this area will greatly impact my experience as a tourist here, so I can only imagine how locals must feel.

My husband proposed to me on a tiny secluded black sand beach off the trail at the end of La Perouse Bay. We always enjoy the drive towards the bay and I have often commented that if I could live anywhere in Hawaii, I would choose Makena because of it’s natural beauty, history and sense of wilderness.

I lived on Maui from late 80′s to early 90′s. When access to Makena (Big Beach/Little Beach) was by a dirt road.
I think in the spirit of Aloha, the people must gather enough signatures to introduce a referendum. A referendum that will curb or stop development.
At least if a referendum is voted into law, legislatures and developers will have to listen to the voice of the people.
Currently, with the Obama Administration, this is the time to enact and strengthen laws, challenging Developers while protecting the interest of the Hawaiian people.
